My Family Culture
"The quality of your life is the quality of your relationships."

A major catastrophe has almost completely devastated the infrastructure of your country. The emergency government has decided that the surviving citizens will be best served if they are evacuated to other countries willing to take refugees. You and your immediate family are among the survivors of this catastrophic event. However, you have absolutely no input into the final destination or in any other evacuation details. You are told that your host country’s culture is completely different from your own, and that you might have to stay there permanently. You are further told that, in addition to one change of clothes, you can only take 3 small items with you. You decide to take three items that you hold dear and that represent your family culture.
The three items I would take with me are:
Firstly I would take my Bible because without reading the word and giving God praises, especially during such a crisis in the world I would probably lose my mind. My faith in God will guide me through this terrible ordeal. As a Christian family, reading the Bible would help my family and I as we start our new journey. I could not make it through the day without my faith and God’s strength. Through my faith I’m able to overcome obstacles and persevere through the stressors of everyday life.
Secondly I would take my family album which holds many pictures of my family throughout the years. I would make sure to pack this because it holds a lot of memories of past occasions where we gathered as a loving unit.
Thirdly I would take a book including our language, recipes, special herbs, dressing and hairstyles.
Thinking which one of these to keep would be overwhelming. All of these items are special and dear to me, and I would be lost and disappointed if I had to choose just one!
Insights I gained about myself is that my family is special, and I love them very much. I want to keep my family values, beliefs, and heritage alive to pass on to the future generations. Without my belief in God, my life would be in vain. This is a part of my culture and my family culture which has been passed from generation to generation throughout my family. What I have learnt from this exercise is that things we do in our daily lives represent our culture.
